The U.S. uses over 100 billion single-use plastic bags each year, most of which are sent to landfill or end up contaminating waterways. In response to the environmental risk, legislators and communities across the country have implemented policies to curb plastic bag waste, ranging from banning all single-use bags, to restricting plastic bags or implementing fees for use. With wide differences between single-use bag policies, policymakers and businesses were asking: What actually works? To answer the question, the Closed Loop Center embarked on a two-year study with our partners in the Consortium to Reinvent the Retail Bag.
